I got a request through Ravelry this morning from someone wanting to turn the granny star into a blanket square.  I hadn’t really thought about it before but, as it was a lazy Sunday morning, I was happy to give it a go.  It does work but I think the squares may have to be interspersed with more solid squares before you could make a blanket using them.

One benefit of this is that I realised there was a typo in the final round of the original granny star pattern.  I have amended this but I feel bad about anyone who came a cropper on it in the past.  Sorry!  To make amends I thought I would post this here and on Ravelry for anyone who fancies it.

Here is the pattern I have come up with to turn a star into a sqaure:

Round 1:  Chain 6, slip stitch into first chain to create a loop.

Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as treble throught out), 2 trebles into the ring, chain 3.  *3 trebles into the ring, chain 3**.  Repeat *-** 4 times.  (5 groups of 3 trebles made.) Join with a slip stitich in first 3 chain of the round.

Round 3: Slip stitch into the next 3 chain space from the previous round.  Chain 3, 2 trebles into the chain space from the previous round, chain 3, 3 trebles into the same chain space, chain 1.  *3 trebles into the next 3 chain space from the previous round, chain 3, 3 trebles into the same chain space, chain 1.**  Repeat *-** 4 times.  Join with a slip stitch in first 3 chain of the round.  (10 groups of 3 trebles made.)

Round 4: Slip stitch into first 3 chain space from the previous round.  Chain 1, (1 double crochet, 1 half-treble, 1 treble, 1 double treble, 1 treble, 1 half-treble, 1 double crochet) in same chain space, chain 1, *slip stich in next 1 chain space, chain 1,  (1 double crochet, 1 half-treble, 1 treble, 1 double treble, 1 treble, 1 half-treble, 1 double crochet) in next chain space from previous round, chain 1.** Repeat from *-** 4 times.  Slip stitch into final  1 chain space, chain 1, slip stitch into first dc to join.  Fasten off.

Round 5:  Attach yarn to any double treble crochet from the previous round, chain 1 and dc into same stitch, 19 chain, 1 dc into next double treble crochet, chain 9, 1 dc into next double treble crochet, chain 18, 1 dc into next double treble crochet, chain 9, 1 dc into next double treble crochet, chain 19.  Slip stitch into first dc.

Round 6: Chain 2, treble crochet in same stitch, 10 treble into the chain, chain 3, 9 treble into chain, 1 treble into dc from previous round, 9 treble into chain, 1 treble into dc from previous round, chain 3, 19 treble into chain, 1 treble into chain from previous round, chain 3, 9 treble into chain, 1 treble into dc from previous round, 10 treble into chain, chain 3, 10 treble into chain, slip stitch into first treble.

Round 7: Chain 1 and dc in same stitch.  Dc round into each treble and 3 dcs in each 3 chain corner space.  Fasten off.

Monkey has been photobombing again.

Week 9 and the row count is 235.  I am quite impressed with my total for the week as I seem to have spent a lot of time playing Zelda and the Ocarina of Time rather than crocheting.  I am obviously a better multitasker than I gave myself credit for.

In 5 more rows I will have completed the original chart meaning that any deficiencies in the design from that point forward will be my own fault.  I am quite excited.

The Police Box sign is done but I am having a hard resisting starting the embroidery straight away.

This week’s quote is a real quote – honest –  but it returns no results on Google. Props to you if you recognise it.

Week 8 and the row count is 208.  I am onto the ‘Police Public Call Box’ sign which I am doing in black.  The chart has crocheted letters but my intention is the embroider them on later.  This is mainly so I can get the ‘Public Call’ bit of the sign in there too.  It would annoy me beyond all reason if it just said Police Box.

My major discovery this week is that double crochet doesn’t make for a long blanket.  I am 32 rows away from finishing the charted pattern and the blanket only comes up to my mid-waist. I had suspected that it would not be long enough which was why I added the roof but I now think it may need even more height.  My current plan is to add the text ‘Type 40 TARDIS’ above it.  This will mean I have doubled the original row count of 240 to 480.  Heaven forfend I ever decide to make another one but, if I did, I think treble crochet might be more sensible next time.

I have decided the wonkiness is due to the white wool being a slightly lighter weight than all the rest. I am hoping that a border, along with some judicious pressing, will pull it all straight.

This week’s quote is from a rather underwhelmed Sontaran in The Invasion of Time. We’re on to The Two Doctors now and I am hoping Number 2 will be sniffy about Number 6’s console room so I get a good quote. Crumbs!

Week 7 and I am up to row 178.  (I wasn’t so immoderate in my crocheting as I was last week.) I do find that the idea of a blog article on Sunday encourages me to keep hooking so my progress is pretty steady.

The windows are almost done and now I am beginning to feel that it really looks like a TARDIS. It is getting to the point where working on it in public is a little bit impractical but not so much that it has stopped me from trying.  This week I have worked on it in a pub garden and the laundrette.

The title this week is a proper TARDIS quote again. Hurrah!  We are currently watching The Invasion of Time from the Sontaran box set and a Time Lord was being very rude about poor Sexy. I think he might come to a bad end.

It looks a bit wonky here but less so in real life. I think it's the camera angle.

I don’t know if I should be proud or profoundly ashamed of myself this week.  Week 6 of the blanket and I have completed 151 rows.  That means that I have stitched my way through 56 rows in a week.  What is responsible for this burst of speed?  Well,  all I can say is that I like watching the final week of Britain’s Got Talent while eating Liquorice Allsorts and a side-effect of this is that you get a lot of crochet done at the same time.  Sad but true.  The only glitch this week was discovering that I had dropped 3 stitches somewhere which wasn’t apparent until I started on the windows last night.  Some sneaky increases and a bit of swearing soon sorted this out though.

In other news of uncharacteristic productivity, I have also made strides in planning the finishing touches for the blanket  (while ignoring the fact that I am still weeks away from starting on them).  I have charted up a roof for the TARDIS which was missing from the original design.  ( Click Tardis roof, if you would like a copy.)  And I am working on embroidery charts for the door panel and the Police Box signs.  See, proud or ashamed?  I don’t know which one to plump for.

Tales of a misspent week

I tell you what is turning out to be harder than you’d think, finding a quote each week for the blog posts.  You think after nearly 50 years there would more quotes about the TARDIS.  This week I admitted defeat and just went for one from a favourite scene instead.  It sort of counts… the Doctor was in a box at any rate.
